Count screens, not people

Choosing how long to commit for

There are five term lengths and only one question behind them, which is how far ahead your household can see. Nothing else changes between them. This page compares the lengths on that basis; the figures for each are listed on the order page.

Five lengths, one decision

You can commit for one month, three months, six months, a year or two years. That is the whole menu. A short term does not give you fewer channels, fewer devices or slower support, so nothing about the service shrinks when you choose one. Each length is also paid once, in full, for the period you picked: nothing recurring is set up against your card and nothing continues by itself, which is why the end date matters more here than it would with a rolling account.

Longer terms cost less per month

The cost per month falls at every step up the ladder, and the two-year term is the lowest of the five by a clear margin. If the house is settled and nobody is moving, that is simply the cheaper way to buy the same television. The trade is the obvious one: you have paid further ahead, and money already committed is money you cannot redirect when the living arrangement changes in March.

Match the term to how settled you are

A family in a house they own, with a television that has not moved in five years, is buying certainty and should buy it long. A shared flat where two of the four tenants leave in summer is a different proposition, and the shortest length keeps the whole thing reversible. If you are setting this up for a parent who is not yet sure they will use it, start short and let their habits decide the second purchase.

Multiply before you choose

Term length is the second half of a sum whose first half is screens. Two screens on a two-year term is two lines of two years; there is no discount for buying in pairs. Work out the screens first, choose a length second, then multiply, and nothing at the order page will surprise you. If the total looks wrong when you get there, the fix is nearly always a screen you did not really need rather than a shorter term.

Put the end date in the calendar

On the day you order, add the end of the term to whatever calendar your household actually looks at. The week a line lapses is always the week of a semi-final or the last episode of something, and nobody enjoys sorting it out at that point. Give yourself the closing few days to decide, because that window lets you change the shape as well as the length. Buying again is the natural moment to re-count screens, and households change more over a year than people expect.

Changing shape partway through

The length is fixed when you order and the line runs to the date you bought. If the household grows halfway through, the extra screen comes as its own purchase rather than as an upgrade to the existing one, and the two will then sit on different dates unless you deliberately line them up. Some households find that untidy enough to buy a short term first and bring everything onto one date the next time they buy. Others genuinely do not care. It is better known now than discovered later.

Questions

Is the two-year term really the cheapest?

Per month, yes, and not by a small amount compared with paying month to month. Whether it is the right purchase depends on whether you can see two years ahead for this household.

Can I move up to a longer term partway through?

The straightforward route is to let the current term run to its date and buy a longer one next time. If you want something arranged differently, ask before you buy a second line rather than after.

Worked out what you need?

Once you know how many screens and which line-ups, setting it up takes about a minute.
